Our Bodies and What the Heck is Happening

Yes, this belly was mine, along with the love handles I never asked for.

Let’s face it, our bodies are taking a hit. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here, right?

But what the heck is happening? For many of us despite living the same relatively healthy lifestyle, we start putting on the pounds. You know what I mean. You’ve noticed the jiggly arms and maybe your pants are getting tighter around the waist, butt and thighs. But why? Forty seems to be the magic number (for some, as early as mid-30’s). Once we hit forty, things change. We can primarily chalk what’s happening to our bodies up to hormones.

And darn it, do they have a big impact.

Ladies, let me tell you. Mine was right on target. I was 41 years old and everything came to a screeching halt. It was literally like one day I was fine and the next, all of my hormone levels tanked. When hormones start to wane, it directly affects our metabolism and its ability to burn fat. While hormones make it sound like you’re doomed, you’re not. There’s plenty you can do to take control back.

Growing old gracefully?

Yes, our bodies will eventually succumb to time and age, but how you do so is entirely up to you! And I say growing old gracefully is for the birds. There’s nothing graceful about aging. At all! If you do nothing, you lose strength, balance, bone density, which leads to broken hips and such. P90X guru, Tony Horton always says, “You don’t slow down because you age. You age because you slow down.” There is a lot that is in your control. We’re not helpless to how our bodies age unless you choose to do nothing at all.
